Does My Butt Look Big in This?

HammersmithLondon antilitter campaign

Recently in Hammersmith Broadway, thousands of commuters received free portable ashtrays on their way to and from work handed out personally by man-sized cigarettes.  This was just a part of the HammersmithLondon Business Improvement District (BID) antilitter campaign specifically aimed at smoking related litter.

The aim was to draw attention to the issue of smoking related litter.  Then the portable ashtray was a tangible way of tackling the problem and finally the cigarette people raised awareness dropping any litter in Hammersmith, including smoking related litter, carries a fixed penalty fine of £75.

Although this was a fun scene and was very well received by the commuters, the message was nevertheless very important: the more litter we get rid of, the more clean and attractive the area becomes creating a much more pleasant and healthier environment for all of us, whether we live here, work here or are just passing through on a visit. Safe and Secure

Attention all retailers! HammersmithLondon’s security team have uncovered a new confidence trick taking place in the Hammersmith Town Centre. In May, our PCSOs were involved in a call to a large clothes retailer on King Street.

The reason for the call was that a young Eastern European woman had been detained for behaving suspiciously. The woman had been buying very high priced items from the store (around £100) and very low priced items (under £5.00) each time she went in. She would then take the items away and swap the labels around before returning the lower cost item at the higher price. She would then pocket nearly £100 per exchange. Goods worth about £200 and £2800 in cash were recovered from her as well as a further £1400 on two store cards which the refunds were put on.

The police Criminal Investigation Department then told the BID team that a similar case was reported in Shepherds Bush where a woman was found with £15,000 cash on her person. Stores in Hammersmith are advised to take extra care with refunds or returns and to carefully check both labels and items. For more information please contact the BID office.

PCSOs

In the last three months, our BID PC and PCSOs between them have arrested 15 shoplifters in the Hammersmith BID area. Most of the arrests have taken place in stores on King Street and most of the perpetrators have been officially cautioned or reprimanded. The BIDs Special Constable Laura from the Shopwatch scheme has also had several recent successes with three arrests in the last month, two of which were in one day! We hope to build on this success by introducing more Hammersmith staff members to the scheme and increasing the security presence in the area.

London in Bloom

HammersmithLondons new planted areas on Hammersmith Road, as well as the hanging baskets will be entered in to the 2008 London in Bloom competition. The competition was initiated by British Tourist Board in 1963 and started with a small number of local authorities. Support grew over the years and all thirty three London Boroughs, including the Cities of Westminster and London, have participated in recent years.

The aims and objectives of the competition are to promote floriculture and horticulture for the benefit of the public to encourage displays of flowers, shrubs, trees and landscapes in places visible to the public.  Each year London in Bloom invites all London Boroughs to enter the sixteen or so categories and this year HammersmithLondon are entering the town and city centre award. The judging will take place later in the summer and we are sure Hammersmith will be chosen for its creativity and continuing work with the business community.

Trustee Recruiting

Palingswick House is a beautiful grade 2 listed building situated in Hammersmith. It provides accommodation for about twenty Hammersmith & Fulham based community organisations. These range from community transport to advice for refugees to community media.

The house is owned by the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham and is leased to Palingswick House Limited which is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee.  Palingswick House is managed by an independent board of Trustees and Directors.  They are looking to recruit four new Trustees who have an interest in the local community and experience of policy making and monitoring, charity, property and company law and financial control.
