FREE HammersmithLondon Studio Night

Thursday, May 15, 2008

If there's a HammersmithLondon 'must see' event for 2008, this has to be it. Join us on our exciting Studio Night with the performance of Hard Hearted Hannah!

Every performance of this improvised show is entirely unique. You choose from a playlist of sassy and bittersweet songs inspired by the Jug Band music of the American South - think souped-up washboards, guitars, banjos and cider jugs for bass. Then the Salvos will spin a yarn using only your imagination and the thin air.

Cartoon de Salvo is one of the UK's most exciting theatre companies. Over the last ten years they've captivated audiences with their giddying cocktail of exceptional storytelling, script-defying impro and live music.

The HammersmithLondon Studio Night will take place on Thursday, May 15, 2008 in the Lyric Theatre at 7 pm. As a BID member you can see this amazing performance for free! There is also going to be complimentary wine, food and networking! Please call 020 8741 8157 or e-mail info@hammersmithlondon.co.uk to book your place now.

'Surreal, unpretentious, swashbuckling theatre.' Time Out

'There is nothing twee about Cartoon de Salvo. The company is rightly cherished for its bracing, witty work; the nearest theatre gets to the ingenius freedom of cartoons.' The Guardian

Another Dr Bike Coming Soon

Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Wednesday, March 12th saw the second HammersmithLondon Dr Bike surgery on Lyric Square organised in conjunction with the Borough’s Highways department.  Lots of cyclists received a free bicycle maintenance service together with free puncture repair kits.

Cycling is a cheaper, healthier and greener form of transport and in our busy Business Improvement District, it is often faster too. Thus HammersmithLondon are always looking for ways to make cycling easier and improve circumstances for cyclists.

This time our efforts went towards helping with bicycle security and the local police were at the Dr Bike session on Lyric Square and provided free property marking for bike frames which will help to prevent theft and also aid recovery of any stolen bikes in Hammersmith.

Don’t forget to bring your bike to work for the next Dr Bike surgery which will be on April 16th when the police free property marking service will also be available.

Effective Book Swapping

Thursday, March 6, 2008

Hammersmith London combined the promotion of books on World Book Day with the green theme of protecting the environment by organising a Book Swapping Event on Thursday, March 6, 2008. The aim of the event was to promote the enjoyment of books and reading as well as reusing them in order to save incredible amounts of paper and protect the environment with the very easy action of swapping books.

Lots of people came, swapped their books and asked for more of such events in the future. The book swap proved to be an effective but simple way to encourage broader agendas of promoting environment and attracting consumer footfall.

Hammersmith London is now planning to do the book swapping on a regular basis and possibly organise a ‘HammersmithLondon’ branded outdoor library in the summer.

Crime Summit Update

Saturday, March 8, 2008

The LBHF crime summit was a big success this year with the HammersmithLondon stall displaying BID marketing material, security model and safetynet radio report. Businesses and residents were invited to presentations from MPs Andrew Slaughter, Greg Hands and from London Mayoral candidate Boris Johnson in a surprise visit.

Matthew John attended the Hammersmith Broadway ward panel meeting hosted by Kevin White from LBHF CCTV. Both Kevin and Sergeant Gareth Winnard were very complimentary about the BID and praised it’s dedication to safe and secure initiatives. Councillor Stephen Cowan also attended the meeting and praised the BID for helping to ‘pick up the slack’ left by the removal of police staff from the area to enhance the Fulham and Shepherds Bush teams.

A warning notice was served on a well known aggressive beggar operating on King Street and he will be targeted to be moved on when in the BID area. Contains Violence Performance at the Lyric

Don’t miss this night of tragedy

This is one night of tragedy you don't want to miss! 'Contains Violence' is theatre with a difference which you just have to see! Audience members sit on The Lyric Theatre's Hammersmith terrace and gaze at the windows in the buildings around them. Headphones and an undercurrent of whispers add to the evening's mystery.

Described as part mystery and part peep show, Contains Violence reflects upon our atomized, urban society where the anonymous observer freely creates fantasies from snapshots of the overseen and overheard.

This performance of David Rosenberg’s Hitchcock style thriller takes place on the Lyric terrace – from March 27 to April 26, 2008. For more information, see the flyer, call 0871 22 117 29 or visit the Lyric website.

Walking Works

24th April Walking to Work Day 2008

24th April – 22nd May 2008 Walking Works pedometer challenge

Hammersmith & Fulham Council together with Transport for London would like to encourage London’s businesses to take part in a 4 week ‘Walking to Work’ challenge – where employees can compete internally and with London’s other participating businesses to increase the amount of walking they do over a 4 week period.

Individuals will be given a pedometer and asked to record the number of steps they take over that time.  The idea is to gauge a baseline over the first few days.  This would be the amount of steps they tend to take on a daily basis and then set themselves a target to increase that number over the 4 week challenge period.   Individuals should increase the number of steps they take on business related journeys, such as to and from work, and or walking to and from meetings etc – whether it is walking all or some of the way.

The following free resources are available; please register your interest with us stating your name, business and contact details.

info@hammersmithlondon.org.uk

or
travelplans@lbhf.gov.uk

           Pedometers for participating individuals

A personal log-card, which will accompany the pedometer and for individuals to record the number of steps they take over a 4 week period

A3 Wall charts, which can go on display within a workplace to show the collective number of steps the organisation / participating teams have taken

Promotional posters for display within the organisation

An advisory leaflet explaining the campaign

£ 50 M&S voucher for best individual in Hammersmith & Fulham

The materials should be with you before the 24th April 2008.
