ATCM Summer School and Conference
June 23-25, 2008

The Association of Town Centre Managers (ATCM) held their Summer School and Conference from 23rd to 25th June in Liverpool. It was attended by HammersmithLondon along with BID and town centre managers from all over England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales as well as from Dallas, Texas and Adelaide, Australia.

There was an opportunity to hear about initiatives and how different issues such as signage, transportation, security and cleansing are addressed and managed in other places.  What was interesting is that regardless of location the issues facing town centres are similar to one another even though the circumstances were different. The job of a successful BID or town centre manager is to find the right solution for their town and implement the strategy.

HammersmithLondon, represented by Patricia Bench, delivered a presentation to the conference on the importance of Partnerships within a town centre. Patricia commented on Hammersmith’s various successful partnerships such as our work with the local police in providing additional PCSOs as well as our partnership with the Borough and TFL which results in regular Dr Bike and Travel Plan activities. Ultimately though, the most important partnership is the one between the BID and the businesses themselves. This Partnership is essential to identify the needs of business in the district and one we are always keen to improve and build on.

PCSO Arrests
June update

The HammersmithLondon security team had another major success in the area recently with the arrest of a major prolific young shoplifter. The suspect is well-known by police and CCTV for regularly stealing from retailers along the King Street area. One of our BID PCSOs saw her after the morning police briefing and immediately detained her until a response team arrived. She was arrested and is now on bail pending a court appearance. This targeting of shoplifters and anti-social behaviour within the Hammersmith Town Centre will have a hugely beneficial effect on retailers and improvements to their bottom line profits.

In addition, as knife crime is a key issue for the police services at the moment, the Hammersmith Safer Neighbourhood Team will be concentrating on the detection of knives in the major shopping areas. Operation Blunt has been set up to deter the use of knives and their effect on gang culture by placing ‘knife arches’ around to detect if a person is carrying a concealed weapon. BID PC Davies also has a hand held ‘wand’ to carry out personal sweeps on stopped suspects. The operation has been very successful with 2 arrests this month for blade possession; both suspects are now awaiting trial.

Project Argus
Tuesday, June 10, 2008

HammersmithLondon took part in the recent project Argus event hosted by Kensington police in conjunction with the National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO). NaCTSO is responsible for protecting the UK’s most valuable sites and has the remit for increasing the UK’s resilience and security of crowded places.

Project Argus is a multi media terrorist attack simulation that allows participants to make decisions about what businesses and staff need to do to help prevent and survive a terrorist attack.

HammersmithLondon will be supporting future anti-terrorism initiatives and view this as a major concern for the area. BID initiatives such as Safetynet and enhanced business communication will provide valuable assistance in supporting anti-terrorism initiatives. If you suspect that a person or activity will cause immediate danger to people or property, call the national anti-terrorism hotline on 0800 789 321.

Summer Baskets
New Flowers around the Town Centre

The new HammersmithLondon hanging basket displays have now been put up around the BID area. The displays replace the previous winter baskets which are being recycled.

The baskets are put in according to a time frame which should ensure that they are in full bloom in time for the summer months, adding much needed vibrancy and colour to the Hammersmith Town Centre. The baskets are designed by Windowflowers, who are pioneers of hanging baskets in various city areas.
