ATCM  CHAMPION AWARD
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ARUN SONDHI  SHORTLISTED

There’s been quite a stir in the HammersmithLondon Business Improvement District (BID) lately following the news that Executive Director, Arun Sondhi has been shortlisted for The Association of Town Centre Management (ATCM) Champion of the Year 2007/08 Award.

This award is for individuals who have made a major contribution to town centre management and have acted as the driving force to revitalise either an existing town centre or have otherwise changed their district in some other way.

ATCM have said the calibre of entrants this year was extremely high and over 100 nominations were received. The achievement of reaching the final shortlist of four is all the more impressive when you see that the other candidates are from Plymouth, Liverpool and Great Yarmouth making Arun and Hammersmith the only successful contender in this category from any London Borough!

The judges of this award are looking for a local hero not necessarily a Town Centre Manager, but someone who could be from the private, public or community sector and whose efforts deserve recognition.  This acknowledgement could be because they have been active in setting up a new partnership, made an outstanding and sustained contribution to their area, invigorated the existing town centre or otherwise stimulated their local area.

In Arun’s case, within weeks of joining HammersmithLondon, he recruited a new team and has since overseen numerous activities such as, to name but a few, improving and enhancing the Christmas lighting, organising and supporting events on Lyric Square from the Lyric Summer Party to markets and music events, arranging free guided walks of Hammersmith, celebrating our local heritage, developing crime awareness campaigns in conjunction with the Police, retailers, pub/leisure operators and offices.

Until spring 2007, Arun owned and ran his own print and design business in Hammersmith for fifteen years, giving him an acute grasp on the area and insight into its various needs.  After this, in June 2007, he joined HammersmithLondon as Executive Director which is proving to be the perfect vehicle for him to exercise his passion for Hammersmith, serving the needs of the businesses in Hammersmith and ensuring the BID area is cleaner, safer, more energised and better promoted than ever before. As Executive Director, Arun exemplifies the core values of the BID and is zealous about improving the image of Hammersmith and ensuring its continued success as a vibrant and competitive area for business.

JUST A PERFECT DAY…

THE BEST WAY TO SPEND VALENTINE’S DAY IN HAMMERSMITH

Valentine's Day is the perfect excuse to crank up the romance in your relationship/ marriage or if you are single - treat yourself like a king/queen. So instead of moaning about how Valentine's Day is just a corporate-fuelled concept (yeah, we know!), spend one of the best days in your life!

  1. Stay in bed and sleep in. Then take a nice long warm bath with L’Oreal products - the hot water will calm you down and loosen up your muscles.
  2. Eat a balanced breakfast from M&S, Saisbury’s or Tesco (don’t forget to make breakfast for your beloved too).  In case you don't live together, give your beloved a good morning call (text) to wake him/her up using your fancy Sony Ericsson phone!
  3. Get the tube. Take off one stop early and walk - a morning walk can get you ready for your day, lower your stress level, and improve your health! On the way to the office get a nice coffee from Pret A Manger or Starbucks.
  4. While in the office do not forget to register for the HammersmithLondon Travel Event on the 28th or the FREE walk on 29th of February.
  5. It is time for lunch break! Browse TK Maxx, Habitat, Primark, River Island and the other stores in the two shopping centres - treat yourself with something new!   Do not forget to buy a Valentines Day Card from Clinton Cards or Cards Galore.
  6. Buy PS, I Love You by Cecelia Ahern, Harper Collins Publishing from WHSmith to get you in a romantic mood. If you have kids - get them tickets for Disney’s High School Musical at Hammersmith Apollo.
  7. Go back to the office and finish your tasks quickly! Have a brief relaxing Coca-Cola break in the early afternoon.
  8. It is 5 pm! If you are single - go to Virgin Active or Fitness First during the evening. There’s a good chance that nobody will be there so you won’t have to worry about any of the good equipment being used.
  9. Call your single friends and see what they are doing. If your friends don’t have any plans, perhaps you all could go to William Morris or the other great pubs in the area for a few drinks.
  10.  If you are single – why not go see ‘The resistible rise of Arturo Ui’ performance at the Lyric?!
  11. Book a nice place for dinner – we recommend Smollensky’s or Bianco Nero. Make sure you book your table in advance as most places are packed on Valentines Day.
  12. Spend a romantic night at the Novotel or Holiday Inn. Going to a hotel for the night can be fabulous, especially if you have kids. Think about dinner (and breakfast) in bed and uninterrupted time alone.
