Does My Butt Look Big in This?

HammersmithLondon’s Does My Butt Look Big in This? campaign aims to highlight the problem of smoking related litter in the BID area together with the correct usage of the Gum & Butt bins.

Since the Smoking Ban came into force in July 07, certain areas, such as outside some pubs and outside the tube stations, have shown an increase in smoking related litter.

Special bins have been installed around Hammersmith Broadway Station, the so called Gum & Butt Bins.  The idea is that people stub out their cigarettes and then drop them into the bin section. Sadly however, feedback is that they are not being used properly.  Whilst smokers have been seen putting out their cigarettes on the bin, they then drop the same butt onto the floor.

Inevitably, this leads to a further build up of unsightly smoking related litter which is difficult to clean up.  Cigarette ends fall into gutters and grates, especially the grates surrounding the trees outside the Broadway station, and are missed by normal cleaning methods.

HammersmithLondon wants to reinforce the message that efforts of the individual are vital and everyone can make a difference. Research indicates that a clean and tidy place is more likely to stay that way and instinctively commands respect from everybody using the area.

The 2007 campaign reduced smoking related litter by 20%. We aim to do better this year! To raise awareness and urge everyone to dispose of their litter conscientiously, HammersmithLondon will be supplying retailers with free portable pocket ashtrays to hand out whenever they make a cigarette sale thus encouraging responsible disposal of litter.

Pocket ashtrays will also be distributed directly to offices together with ‘Does My Butt Look Big in This?’ posters.  Help to look after and respect your environment!

Guide Dogs

HammersmithLondon will be supporting the launch of the guide dog awareness campaign on May 10th in Lyric Square. The event will be the start on an ongoing campaign to raise awareness within the business community of the rights and needs of guide dog owners. Recently the BID security team have visited various retail business in the BID area as visually impaired guide dog owners have actually been refused entry to their premises. This is of course against the law and should not be allowed to happen. Action Trust for the Blind feel that this is an awareness issue and would like to invite businesses and residents to come along and learn more about these amazing canine human partnerships. As well as guiding demonstrations there will also be the opportunity to meet staff, guide dog owners and of course dogs. The ongoing campaign is designed to draw attention to the continuing difficulty that many guide dog owners experience in accessing shops, restaurants and mini cabs.

It is also important to remember how distressing each individual incident can be.  This has become such a problem that Guide Dogs are considering offering training to Guide Dog owners to help them deal with the psychological impact of this kind of discrimination.  A local guide dog owner Dave Kent has said “it is deeply hurtful to be treated like a second class citizen.  All we want is to be allowed to get on with our lives in the same way as anyone else.  Hopefully by bringing these issues to the attention of the local business community, as well as the general public we may be able to go some way to improving the situation, and make equal access for all a reality.” Please come and visit this wonderful event and show your support for people with visual impairments.

PCSOs

The HammersmithLondon safe and secure team had a major arrest in the BID area in April. BID PC Marc Davies and 1 PCSO were patrolling the Macbeth street area of Hammersmith late and night and noticed a man behaving in a suspicious manner. When Marc questioned him, the man resisted and was restrained in handcuffs whilst searched. PC Davies found a total of 20 wrapped up bags of Heroin and 21 bags of cocaine. The man was immediately arrested and is currently on bail awaiting trial. This arrest is a major success for the local SNT and BID security team and has removed a drug dealer from the area. The same area is being patrolled regularly by the police and no further suspicious activity has taken place.

Safetynet

The upgrade of the HammersmithLondon safetynet radio system is now complete and has been launched. The system upgrade means that Hammersmith now has a fully functioning, multiple frequency radio link, to bring businesses, police, CCTV and BID together by enhancing their communication. Shops and retailers in Hammersmith can now contact each other on the scheme to increase awareness and reduce the effects of stock loss. Stock loss and shoplifting are major concerns for retailers in Hammersmith and can drastically affect the success of the business.

Safetynet connects the retailer directly to the CCTV control room and the local BID PCSOs. The business can then request assistance via the radio which will be automatically logged and recorded by the BID CCTV operators. The system is run by RMS-NET which is a very advanced system to log calls and monitor the system, and features a panic alarm that businesses can use to alert CCTV and the police if they are in danger.

The new safetynet system also has a separate channel for use by the Hammersmith offices to share information and monitor incidents that affect the commercial sector. For more information about safetynet and to become a member of the scheme, please call the Matthew John on 020 8846 3240.

Shopwatch

HammersmithLondon is proud to welcome our newest special police officer into the area. Daniel Karim joins the local safer neighbourhood team from the Hammersmith branch of HSBC bank, as part of the Shopwatch community policing scheme. Daniel joins Laura Whitehead from Mothercare as the second participator of the HammersmithLondon, Laura has been a special constable for 1 year and has contributed to the increased safety and security of the Hammersmith town centre.

Shopwatch is a new scheme run by the metropolitan police where local BID businesses are invited to allocate a member of their staff to be trained as a special constable and work a minimum of 2 days a month in and around their premises. The advantage to businesses is that they have a fully trained police officer on their staff, trained to deal with various situations. The officer can also patrol around the business area, providing a valuable security presence and actively reducing stock loss and the chances of shoplifting.

HammersmithLondon will be running a Shopwatch scheme later in the year to encourage more BID businesses to join this beneficial and rewarding scheme. For more information about Shopwatch in the meantime, please call the BID office on 020 8741 8157.
